Getting to the root cause is what we do

Functional Medicine

Ultimately, Functional Medicine uncovers why a set of symptoms exists in the first place, or why a client has a particular disease. This is done by finding the root cause or mechanics involved. As each client's care plan is unique and individualized, this discipline considers healthcare personalization. Genetically and biochemically, we are all unique. An individualized healthcare approach emphasizes the individual rather than the disease.

Functional Medicine is characterized by finding the root cause of disease.

At The Vagus Clinic, we blend functional medicine with cutting-edge therapies to address the root causes of health issues. Our approach ensures that every aspect of your well-being is taken care of.

Here's how we do it:
— Identify and Eradicate Toxins: The dose makes the poison! We focus on removing poisons stuck in your body and reducing exposure to new ones. Toxins like fungi, EMF, Lyme disease, heavy metals, and environmental pollutants can overload your system.
— Support Detox and Drainage Pathways: We open and support detox pathways, including GI/microbiome support, to ensure your body can effectively eliminate toxins.
— Modulate the Immune System: By modulating your immune system and lowering inflammation, we help your body achieve balance and resilience.
— Optimize the Vagus Nerve: Finally, we optimize the vagus nerve to maintain positive changes and support overall health.

What Does This Mean? For every disease, diagnosis, or system, the root causes often share commonalities. By identifying which specific toxins are most prevalent in your body, we can provide targeted support to the corresponding organ system. This ensures a more effective and personalized treatment.

Our Process

Full Assessment

Your Functional Medicine Journey will begin with a full assessment of your past medical history and present medical concerns, symptoms, and health goals.

Lab Testing

After thoroughly evaluating your history and current symptoms, we will determine the best functional lab testing for you to do.  All of our functional lab tests will be sent to you via post, you provide the sample, and then you ship the sample directly to the lab. These test will help us identify the root cause of your symptoms and tailor a customized treatment plan to care for your specific needs.

First Appointment

Once your functional lab tests results come in, the test results will be reviewed by one of our Practitioners. From there you will have your first appointment via a recorded zoom session with your FMP to review your labs in detail, thoroughly explain how your results and any underlying infections affect your health.

Personalized Treatment Plan

After your first appointment you will receive a detailed and curated treatment plan including the suggested supplements, and nutrition recommendations as well as mindset, exercise, movement and lifestyle coaching that aligns with your goals.

Follow-up Appointments

Throughout your program you will have follow up appointments with your FMP to assess your progress and discuss any changes that need to be made.  In addition you will have unlimited email access to your HC for any questions or concerns along the way.

Instead of asking “What drug matches up with this disease?”, Functional Medicine asks the vital questions that very few conventional doctors ask, such as; “Why do you have this problem in the first place? Why has function been lost?” Most importantly… ”What can we do to restore function?”

Types of Testing

Gut Zoomer

Gut Zoomer is an at-home stool test that assesses bacteria, yeast, viruses, and parasites in the gut microbiome, alongside relevant digestive and inflammatory markers. The panel measures hundreds of species of microbes at once, providing the most comprehensive digestive health test on the market. If you are experiencing an autoimmune condition, IBS/IBD, gastrointestinal issues, liver and gallbladder problems, brain fog, inflammation, fatigue, skin rashes, neurological disorder, mood disorder, diabetes or weight loss issues, you will benefit from this panel.

Organic Acids Test (OAT)

Organic Acids Test (OAT) is an at-home urine test that detects by products of daily cellular metabolism. This panel can accurately identify conditions associated with genetic disorders, nutrient deficiencies, intestinal dysbiosis, and toxicity from diet and prescription drugs. The Organic Acids panel is designed to take a broad look at multiple systems and get a snapshot of how the body is functioning. If you are experiencing fatigue, hyperactivity, insomnia, depression, anxiety, forgetfulness, brain fog, and gastrointestinal issues, you will benefit from this panel.

Total Tox Burden

Total Tox Burden is an at-home urine test that detects various heavy metals, mycotoxins, and environmental toxins. Toxic exposure is a reality of our daily lives, but toxic overload can stress our bodily systems and manifest in various ways. Toxins can lead to elevated oxidative stress and increase demand on the body's detoxification pathways, particularly in the liver. When the liver can't adequately eliminate toxins or infectious byproducts, these toxins can clog up normal detox pathways and lead to a range of chronic inflammation symptoms. If you're experiencing multiple chronic symptoms and can't lose weight despite diet and exercise, you could be carrying a high toxic burden.

Comprehensive Blood Chemistry Panel

Comprehensive Blood Chemistry Panel is one of the most efficient, effective, and affordable general screening tests. Blood work can help us establish a baseline of biomarkers to track your health and nutritional needs and is essential to understanding your current health. From here, customized recommendations can be created and tailored to your needs. Functional Medicine Practitioners use a more strict and narrow reference range when reading blood work results compared to conventional medicine. After surveying blood work, what a conventional physician might deem as normal might be considered abnormal to a Functional Medicine Practitioner. This can explain why you may be experiencing symptoms like thyroid dysfunction, fatigue, inflammation, etc., even though your physician has told you everything looks normal.

Tickborne 2.0

Tickborne diseases and other stealth infections (hidden infections that cause chronic strange sometimes ambiguous symptoms) are rising throughout the World from a variety of ticks and other stinging insects, which carry and pass on different microorganisms to humans and animals. Tickborne diseases have more than doubled in 13 years and represent 77% of all vector-borne disease reports. Lyme disease accounts for 82% of all cases.
